Riviera Nayarit – the name itself conjures up an image of beautiful beaches perfect for surfing, lush green coast line and rolling mountains. Lying cozily between the Sierra Madre Occidental range and the grand Pacific Ocean is the destination of Riviera Nayarit.
I as a citizen of this place will be understandably biased about the region but what I will be telling you today is totally devoid from any such personal feelings. Yes, I will be singing glorious praises of this magical land but all of that will be true.
Riviera Nayarit is 200 mile stretch of coastline in the state of Nayarit which encompasses towns such as Sayulita, San Francisco (San Pancho), La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias and Punta de Mita.
Here is a brief description of the most popular destination Riviera Maya for the uninitiated:
1) Nuevo Vallarta:
This resort can be called as the gateway to the Riviera Nayarit. It is close to the famous city of Puerto Vallarta. Nuevo Vallarta is of fairly new origin (15 years). It is planned resort with plethora of hotels, resorts, luxury villas and residential developments. It has 3 mile of white sandy beach with luxury hotels catering to high end clientele. It boasts of a 300 slip marina with about 7 miles of shippable water channels and hosts many sailing tournaments & events. Nuevo Vallarta is arguably the most modern zone in Mexico.
Bucerias is a complete contrast to Nuevo Vallarta. It is a small coastal village with a church, cobblestone streets and a main square – Totally Mexican! It has 18 miles of beach which provide ample opportunities for water sports such as jet skiing, sailing, windsurfing and kayaking.
3) La Cruz de Huanacaxtle:
Situated25 kms from Puerto Vallarta this village by the sea has cobblestone streets, a square and a relatively desolated waterfront where fishermen can be seen going about their business. It hassome of themost beautiful beaches in the region. There are plenty of expats from all over world which has resulted in opening up of many restaurants and café in this village. International Sport Fishing Tournament is also held in La Cruz. I can safely say that you will find this destination totally unlike what you may have seen.
4) Punta de Mita:
Punta Mita is a one of its kind resort area in a peninsula with an area of approximately 6 square km. It is blessed with 9.5 miles of beaches surrounded by hills. It is the ultimate in luxury living and leisure with Four Season Resort Punta Mita and the St. Regis Punta Mita Resorts, 2 Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses , residential communities and villas.
Sayulita is a village 25 km from Puerto Vallarta and is also known as the “Crown Jewel” of Riviera Nayarit and rightly so. It is now hunting ground for surfers. Its lush green forests, beaches and warm weather make it a perfect destination for snowbirds from U.S. It has many restaurants, taco stands and cafes making a foodie’s delight. The town has a Mexican feel to it and this sets it apart from other destinations of Riviera Nayarit.
